NNFL round up - September 18th, 2008

September 18th, 2008 WITH pitches still being badly affected by the heavy rain and floods which hit the area a week earlier, Saturday’s North Northumberland League programme was restricted to only three matches. Berwick Town travelled to take on another new side, Ashington Athletic in the first division. In the end they managed to come away with a point following a 1-1 draw, but they left it late, not scoring until the 82nd minute. Berwick had the better of the first half but neither side could score and the teams turned around 0-0 at the break. In the second half Berwick continued to create the better chances, but it was Ashington who took the lead with a Jamie Morgan goal. Town refused to fold and they battled on to the end, the equaliser coming eight minutes from time. In the second division Belford took the points with a 5-4 away win over Hedgeley. The home side had the better of the first half and they led 3-1 at the break with goals from Fergus Machin, Stephen Shendon and Dean Howe, Phil Duncan replying for the visitors. But a Kevin France hat-trick in the second half saw Belford hit back to take the spoils. Tom Grethe also scored for them with Howe netting his second for Hedgeley. Wooler went down 4-2 at home to Alnwick Town Reserves. A first half goal from Michael Smith gave Alnwick the lead at the break. Neil Michael doubled their advantage at the start of the second half, but Wooler hit back through Warren Lumsden. A Dale Kennedy effort restored Alnwick’s two goal advantage, Paul Hardy pulled another back for the Glendale side, but Alnwick always looked the more likely winners and so it proved when James Jackson netted a fourth. Results and fixtures RESULTS from Saturday were: Division One - Ashington Ath 1, Berwick Town 1. Division Two - Wooler 2, Alnwick Town Res 4; Hedgeley 4, Belford 5. All other games postponed.
