Rothbury Football Club was founded in 1876, and as such is one of the oldest clubs in Northumberland. The football pitch at Armstrong Park, gifted to the club by Armstrong Estate in1984, was originally opened in 1949.
Maintained by local volunteers, it is generally accepted as being among the finest in the county. The original wooden clubhouse was greatly prized until decay and woodworm set in and new premises were required to house the increasing number of players. In 1979 local supporters with a variety of building skills cooperated to build a new clubhouse: an excellent example of community action.
